As fuel prices continue to soar, taxi drivers like Jassi Bhangu are facing a tough reality. The recent federal government's fuel excise discount offered a brief respite, but now, with prices surging once again, drivers are feeling the pinch. Mr. Bhangu, a taxi driver from Shepparton, Victoria, has been driving for 12 hours a day, yet he still struggles to make ends meet.
"It's a constant worry," he shared. "I often have to tell my kids to wait a little longer because I need to work more hours to earn enough."
The forecast for fuel prices is not promising, with RACQ predicting a rise to around $2.20 per liter for unleaded and $2.60 for diesel. For Mr. Bhangu, this means even longer hours on the road.
"The increase in fuel prices directly impacts our earnings," he explained. "We're already working at our limit, and yet, we're not making enough."
This situation has led many drivers, including Mr. Bhangu, to consider taking on a second job. "It's becoming increasingly difficult to survive solely as a taxi driver," he said. "Most of us are thinking about alternative sources of income."
While APCO, an Australian petrol station chain, assures there are no supply issues, the impact on drivers remains significant. Peter Anderson, APCO's director, acknowledges the increase in consumer prices and panic buying since the excise discount ended.
"There's no shortage of product," he clarified. "It's a logistics issue, and we're working hard to keep up with the demand."
However, for drivers like Mr. Bhangu, the focus remains on their financial survival. The 12-hour workdays are taking a toll, and the need for additional income is evident.
"It's a challenging time for us," he concluded. "We're doing our best to adapt, but it's a constant battle."
